Education
of the rural poor |

In Nagapattinam district (Tamil Nadu),
714 families from 20 villages covered; 614 girls and
312 boys of the age of 10 to 16 coached in evening
classes in their school curriculum. About 70% from
most backward segments of the society; 12% from Scheduled
Caste/Scheduled Tribe families. |

In Madurai district (Tamil Nadu), 15 villages covered
of which 30% were most backward; dalits 8% of the students
so far. 275 boys and 291 girls being given coaching. |
|
Intensive periodic training of teachers to improve
productivity. 40 such teacher training camps held. |
|
130 girls given special coaching for the 10th and
the 12th Grade Board examinations to enhance their
self confidence and ability to face the examinations.
100% passed the examinations. Marks scored increased
in the Board examinations in absolute terms by 30 to
65 percentage points compared to the quarterly class
scores of the same students before our coaching. |

Travel cum cultural camp for poor children |
|
28 boys and 48 girls with 16 teachers and 5 parents
taken on a three day residential cultural camp. Physical
exercise training, exposure to heritage stories and
simple talks on personal development featured in the
camp. |

Rural development |
|
One integrated cattle and organic farming camp for
28 women farmers and 22 men farmers done in Pudukottai.
As a result 10 have shifted to organic farming and
4 have installed bio-gas plants. |

One one-day animal welfare camp conducted for 300
marginal farming families with 380 animals from 11
villages. |

Women and girls health and hygiene |
|
135 women from 32 remote villages benefited by two
Gynae camps in which senior women doctors participated.
70% were from backward classes and 9% were from dalit
families. |

Financed health camps in three interior Uttaranchal
mountainous areas (Village Satoli, Lueshal and Ranikhet,
Dt. Nainital); simple rural surgery done by ‘Aarohi’ a
well established NGO in collaboration with Rural Medical
Center Delhi, both voluntary agencies. 228 patients
treated out of which 158 were women; 10 surgeries conducted;
27 women came for ante-natal care. |
